EDG Channels Cape Cod with West Coast Sensibility at Lido House in Newport Beach

Picturesque seaside cliffs and a vast harbor inviting plentiful aquatic escapades have long made Newport Beach, California a desirable getaway. Capturing the coastal allure of this beach-strewn Orange County hub is the 130-room Lido House, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection.

A transformation of the old City Hall site on the Balboa Peninsula, Lido House comes courtesy of WATG's Irvine California based office and Novato, California-based EDG Interior Architecture + Design, melding such comforting materials as walnut, oak, brick, brick and concrete. "Influenced by a West Coast intepretation of the classic Cape Cod style, the design and residential scale humanize the hotel with a 'home away from home' feeling, says Akiko Hrovat, EDG's Studio Design Director.

To create a "beach house retreat," as Hrovat describes the atmosphere, outdoor spaces, such as the alfresco dining area, courtyard pool, and rooftop bar with pops of yellow and green were embraced. Inside, it's also a "celebration of the relaxed Southern California lifestyle," points out Hrovat, abundant in nautical touches. Guestrooms, some arranged like intimate cabins flaunting balconies, others full-fledged suites with stand alone cottages, features beds tucked underneath cool backdrops of ship-lap and a blue-dominated palate.

Boat decking-inspired floor patterns are found in both the spa and the lounge, the latter a cozy spot to read in a wingback chair by the fireplace. Mermaid light fixtures and a poster for the 1948 sabotaged ship flick Wake of the Red Witch lend a sense of playfulness to the private dining room of Mayor's Table Pacific Pub + Kitchen. That space, with its wood paneling and houndstooth patterns, is akin to "a luxury ship captain's quarters," adds Hrovat.

Designed for the community as much as hotel guests, the Mayor's Table nods to Lido House's heritage with a photograph collage of Newport Beach's mayors past. The restaurant's bar, combining leather, plaid, and metal accents, as well as a custom mural that also calls to mind the water, is the hotel's heartbeat. "It's a hyper-local hospitality experience, with a residential sensibiliy and resort amenities," explains Hrovat. "It's fresh, it's contemporary, but the design also evokes nostalgia."
