The Chinese National is Interior Design's "Best of Year" for hotel dining!

It's been a big week for team EDG! We are so proud of our team for bringing home two wins for The Chinese National in Jakarta, Indonesia. 

The Chinese National was awarded Interior Design Magazine's Best of Year Award in the Hotel Dining Category - one of the industry's most prestigious awards. Interior Design's Best of Year is the design industry's premiere design awards program, honoring the most significant work of the year. 

The Chinese National has also been named the winner of the IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Awards for Best Restaurant, Lounges, and Bars!

A complex of four venues in one, The Chinese National is a culinary destination that redefines the approach to Chinese cuisine. The concept is based on the four great inventuons of China and consists of Letterpress, a tea house by day and cocktail bar by night; Iron Needle, a dumpling and noodle shop; Black Powder Red, a Szechuan Restaurant; and Paper Duck, a luxury Cantonese roast duck venue. The design of all venues share a similar language, while each space takes on its own visual dialect. 

"The client desired a restaurant that would have an impact on the dining scene in Jakarta, but had limited space after providing the required size of the breakfast restaurant," explains Piya Thamchariyawat, Principal + Senior Creative Director. "This is one of the age-old challenges facing hotel dining: hotel owners are required to have a certain number of seats for breakfast, but it is impossible to fill those seats at other times of day. So, we decided to turn a liability into an asset. In the evening we created four unique venue options for dining that would appeal to multiple demographics in Jakarta. But for breakfast these venues come together to operate as one."
