LA Eater: A Bazaar Veteran Opens This Bright and Airy Hotel Restaurant in Manhattan Beach

In this week's Los Angeles Eater, Mona Holmes explores the opening of Westdrfit Manhattan Beach. "Just in time for warmer weather months comes the opening of Jute Coastal Bar + Kitchen, which is inside the new westdrift Manhattan Beach. The hotel remained open during an eight month revamp, but the restaurant debuted on March 28.

About the hotel: it’s an expansive property that was ready for an update. Inspired by the winds that swept sand over the Manhattan Beach boardwalk, a beachy, coastal theme implemented by San Francisco-based EDG Design and Theresa Fatino Design. This is the first property from Marriott International’s luxury Autograph Collection, and everything is constructed around an open floor plan that enables comfortable drinking or dining anywhere in the bright open building, along with soaring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a golf course.

Chef Octavio Sabado formerly worked at The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel, and established his business chops at Porto’s and the T-Bird Restaurant Group. Sabado is going for shared plates like ahi tuna ceviche with aguachile or salt roasted beets with raspberry, arugula, herbed goat cheese, pistachio, and nitrogen. Larger entrees include grilled hanger steak or the sustainable king salmon. As for the name, jute is the rough fiber from tropical plant that makes twine and rope.

The central bar is filed with woven chairs, white and blue tiles, and skylights throughout. The cocktail menu stays in line with the bi-coastal motif. One drink is inspired by Spielberg’s movie called Catch Me If You Can and comes infused with Grand Poppy Amaro, which hails from LA’s Greenbar Distillery.
