Westdrift Manhattan Beach has been named a 2018 Gold Key nominee for best resort. Now in its 38th year, the Gold Key recognizes excellence in hospitality design and is noted as one of the industry’s most prestigious honors.
For the design of Westdrift, team EDG was tasked with repositioning an existing property into Autograph Collections first Los Angeles Hotel. This challenge involved taking this “road warrior” hotel consisting of 400 guest rooms, a full service restaurant and more than 35,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor space and imbuing an independent, relaxed personality.
This massive renovation resulted in this award nominated design that effortlessly melds breezy outdoor vibes with the sophistication of coastal living – capturing the dreamscape that is Southern California.
Guests are welcomed in the lobby with wooden columns accented with metal and a check-in desk made from Argentine driftwood. The beachy interior palette includes an East Coast aesthetic expressed with modern lines, natural textures, notes of navy blue, and additional driftwood applications. Artwork from photorealist Eric Zener also populates the walls of the property. An open layout defines the indoor-outdoor concept Jute Coastal Bar + Kitchen, which draws its name from the raw fibers referenced in the lobby’s woven chairs, as well as the string flags installed above the bar.
In addition to a nine-hole golf course, the hotel is home to a fitness center and an outdoor pool flanked by cabanas. Included among more than 35,000 square feet of versatile indoor-outdoor event spaces are 18 meeting rooms, three industrial-chic venues, and a traditional ballroom. More than 110 of the hotel’s 393 guestrooms are equipped with private balconies to maximize the coastal scenery.
