Chaminade Resort & Spa, Santa Cruz, CA
Built in 1930, tucked in the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking breathtaking views of the Monterey Bay, Chaminade Resort and Spa formed the ideal canvas for EDG’s design refresh. EDG’s objective was to restore the integrity of the iconic Spanish Revival architecture by connecting the interior design to the architectural heritage in a Spanish-modern style, while also embracing the stunning natural surroundings of the property.
EDG was tasked with reimagining a new entry, lobby, restaurant, event and meeting spaces, and outdoor social spaces with a fresh and modern perspective, ensuring that the interiors meld harmoniously with the exterior. EDG is also behind the new Food & Beverage Concepts and logo redesign.
“Our goal is to enhance the overall guest experience by restoring the romance of the original architectural heritage with authentic to the period details and layers,” says EDG President + CEO, Jennifer Johanson, “we are creating multiple indoor-outdoor social spaces to optimize the guest’s connection to the outdoors to create the ultimate mountaintop retreat.”
The redesign of the grill + restaurant follows the overarching design concept – a modern interpretation of traditional Spanish colonial style is demonstrated in the bar updates, which include a textured relief tile pattern and forged iron millwork that is implemented throughout the space. The dining space will maximize guests’ view of the sweeping horizon, while still enjoying the dining atmosphere long after the sun has set.
The fireside lounge invites guests to relax in built-in banquettes around the iconic fireplace, designed to be reminiscent of a traditional Hacienda-style home. Bold tile-work and Spanish architectural design elements embrace the heritage of the property. EDG’s goal was to establish the lounge as a focal point of the space and create a central area for guests to gather in a relaxed and residential-like setting.
Furniture and fabrics are rich and textural and juxtapose modern and traditional design elements. Spanish-style lounge chairs are complimented by a simplistic built-in banquette, woven leather dining chairs are complimented by minimal sofa booths. Mixed linen fabrics are paired with leather, and subtle touches of Mediterranean-inspired geometric patterns add visual layering throughout the space. The lighting fixtures celebrate traditional Mission-style design, with forged iron detailing, warm-toned shades, and handwoven leather detailing.
Throughout the space, modern and traditional design elements are juxtaposed, restoring the romance of the original architectural heritage with a modern perspective. The end result is a fresh and authentic redesign that captures the spirit of Chaminade’s past and future.
