Unleashed creativity runs blissfully among the redwoods...The Stavrand opens in Russian River Valley

The Stavrand Russian River Valley, Guerneville, CA

On six forested acres outside Guerneville, the Stavrand is a welcome new bohemian luxury retreat where guests can instantly decompress and connect to nature. The quiet beauty of the 21-room hotel belies the design challenge–transforming and uniting a dormant cluster of 20th century buildings centered around a Spanish Revival villa, a registered historic landmark from the 1920s.

”Defining and developing character–in guest experience, service and design–was the key thrust of the project,” says EDG Principal Jennifer Johanson.” “We saw an opportunity to go beyond the prevailing wine country or river-road aesthetic and embrace a distinctive story that’s unique to this setting.”

The Mission-style architectural details at the property were the building blocks–original Mexican Talavera tiles, treasured antiques, the massive river rock fireplace and solarium (once a terrace) nestled in the trees. The design embraces the stunning setting; stands of old redwoods surround the inn, with trails up the hill passing a 1920s orchard and meadow.

Charged with brand positioning, interior design, architecture, graphic design and purchasing, EDG worked closely with hotelier Emily Glick to tie together the disparate elements and create a compelling experience.

Villa social spaces were opened up, creating places for guests to relax and unwind. The residential kitchen and bar were refashioned to provide for snacks, wine and check-in. In the historic guestrooms, the team added vintage furniture, playful millwork, and new tile and pattern that speak to the building’s original character. Newer structures were transformed into luxurious, modern spaces with fireplaces, cedar soaking tubs and vaulted ceilings in upper floor units.

“We also curated the art and sourced bath amenities and robes, and–all the small details that give a hotel room its personality,” says Johanson.

EDG designed graphics, signage, and wayfinding, drawing from the new and original Talavera ceramics throughout the property. Paige Martin of M Studio Landscape Architecture brought life and order to the outdoor spaces, including the original apple orchards. New pathways and plantings create the setting for perfect weddings or outdoor events.

“The Stavrand’s magic lies in its intimacy,” said Glick.  “Our small but mighty team of hospitality veterans welcomes guests into a tranquil and luxurious stay as they leave their worries at the door, with no agenda or to-do list required.”
