If you ever find yourself at the JW Marriott in Hong Kong’s grill and bar, Flint, take a look at the custom wallcovering EDG created in collaboration with German photographer Michael Wolf.
Wolf’s acclaimed Architecture of Density series showcases photos of Hong Kong hi-rises, representing them more as patterns instead of identifiable forms. EDG developed a concept where the photography would be used as a large-scale custom wallcovering. Wolf, who lived in Hong Kon in the mid-90s was on board with the project, which gives the venue a unique sense of place and a dose of art at the same time.
Yoko Ishihara, Senior Design Director, introduced the idea when the team was finding ways to bring in references to Hong Kong. “I had seen his work in person before at an exhibition in San Francisco and I thought it was really interesting,” she recalls. “At first, you don't know what you are looking at, then you realize it's a elevation of a high rise and then all of a sudden, you start seeing all the details—peoples’ lives, laundry hanging out the window, furniture. I appreciated that emotional journey you take as you take a closer look at his art.” Wolf’s photography was ideal for this installation. Ishihara adds: “It allows people to feel the intrigue if they want to dig deeper, but it can also be just a beautiful, textural backdrop.
