When Jan and Dean hit the charts with Surf City, USA in 1963, their vision was of the famed Huntington Beach surf break. Dubbed HB by the locals, it’s known for its long 9.5-mile stretch of sandy beach, mild climate, great food and of course “radical surfing”.
In 2003 the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach opened, giving visitors to the area a taste of local flavor (both literally and figuratively). Part of the celebration of this SoCal culture was the opening of Pete’s Grille HB. Located on the former site of the famed Mallory Surf Board Factory, the space pays homage to nostalgia of the surf culture.
Since it’s opening, Pete’s has been a steadfast favorite of locals and visitors alike. However, it became time for a bar and restaurant design refresh. The challenge? Cleverly combine the old and new while creating the feel of an updated beach house. EDG, as always, was up for that challenge.
As the restaurant celebrates its reopening this February, visitors will find a congenial, colorful restaurant filled with surfing and beach memorabilia that make this area a beach lover's paradise. The design incorporates an open-air restaurant, outdoor patio and a casual atmosphere perfect for hanging out with family or friends.
Keeping the spirit of a place isn’t always easy, but it is paramount in our design process. Helping visitors find their own version of this history is even more fun. In Jan and Dean’s version Surf City, USA, they’re either “out surfing or they’ve got a party growing”. Pete’s is ready to facilitate the latter.
“Some waves are big and some waves are small, from the H.B pier to Off the Wall. Here’s to you and here’s to me, Here’s to our friend” ~Pete Mallory ~
